Nangka (Jackfruit)

The jackfruit has no contenders in the heaveweight league. It is massive and grows to a hugh tree and the fruit weighing from 5-9 kg and may reach up to 45 kg in weight and grow up to 1m in length. The large compound fruit is formed from an entire flower cluster. Within the fruit there are several hundred yellow fleshy segments called pericarps, each containing an edible seed.The ripe fruit is fragrant, light to deep yellow in colour and has a firm and crisp texture. The fruit rind contains sticky white latex, it is imperative to wear gloves or oil the hands and knife to cut the fruit. It is a staple, both ripe and immature. Enjoy the ripe fruit as it is or sliced and used in a fruit salad, pureed into ice cream/sorbets. Unripe jackfruits are a delicacy among the Malays, the unripe fruits with its young tender seeds are cut into chunks , boiled till soft and cooked in curries.
