Durian flowers

Stinky fruits (depending who is saying that!), fragrant blooms. Many durian lovers are unaware (including me) that the dull-looking durian tree produces some of the most fragrant, vibrant tropical blooms in the regions. For only two months (November and December) each year, the flowers with colourful petals of yellow, red and white decorate the trees. This is a crucial period because any sudden heavy downpour can cause the flowers to drop – no flowers mean no fruits. The flowers are large and feathery with copious nectar. The fruit matures three to four months after the flowering period. You can determine the colour of the durian flesh by the hue of the flowers, Durian season in Malaysia varies from May to August. Malaysian durians are highly sought after and can be expensive especially the really tasty ones. There was a story in the Malaysian local paper that Stanley Ho (Casino King of Macau) flew his private jet to Malaysia to pick up a specific clone of durian known as the “Musang King” variety with thick, creamy, sweet, deep yellow (this durian is also called kunyit or turmeric) colour flesh and with small seeds.
